Kenya tourism earnings in Jan-Sept rise 10 pct

Kenya's tourism revenues jumped 10 percent to 36.6 billion shillings in the first nine months of this year compared with the same period of 2008, the country's tourism board said.

 

Tourism was the number one foreign exchange earner for east Africa's largest economy in 2007, raking in 65.4 billion shillings before last year's bloody post-election crisis sent holidaymakers packing and led to many cancellations.

 

The sterling performance of the sector in 2007 turned the year into a benchmark for the industry. Tourism has since slipped to being the country's third largest hard currency earner after horticulture and tea.
